Eisenhower Dance Ensemble
Award-Winning Contemporary Dance Company Founded by Laurie Eisenhower in 1991 and dedicated to the performance of a diverse range of contemporary dance works. The company has toured theatres across the U.S. and internationally as far as St. Petersburg, Russia. Programs Include: Repertory Evening: Selections from EDE's varied contemporary dance repertory. Acclaimed programs have included works by choreographers Laurie Eisenhower, David Parsons, Stephen Koester, Mel Wong, Pascal Rioult, Mark Dendy, Douglas Nielsen, Bill Evans, Lila York, Demetrius Klein, Colin Connor and Billy Siegenfeld, among others. "A Soldier's Tale": Multi-media work choreographed by Bill DeYoung to Stravinsky's "A Soldier's Tale", with live musical accompaniment by Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings. "Laugh Tracks": Ingenious blending of comedy and contemporary dance, featuring inventive and humorous choreography from Laurie Eisenhower. "Motown in Motion": A visual salute to the tunes that made Motown Records famous. Includes live music from the legendary Motown group, The Contours featuring Sylvester Potts, and dance vignettes performed by EDE, with The Contours and to recordings from other top Motown artists. An entertaining and historical look at Motown, a distinctly American artistic and cultural legacy. "Kids 'n Motion": Inspires students of all ages about learning, creating and enjoying dance. Guillory's play Free at Last was part of the Harlem Renaissance II Festival at the Apollo Theater, and Shelter: A Photograph of Hope was part of Community Works' Theater Connections program, at Aaron Davis Hall. Guillory was commissioned by Mind Builders Inc.. to write Dancing in Her Head: The Life & Times of Katherine Dunham, which toured NYC schools. As an Arts Educator, Guillory has worked with HAI, Community Works, Periwinkle National Theater, Brooklyn AIDS Task Force and served as the Artistic Director of the AIDS Theatre Project. She continues her work in Educational Theatre, presenting workshops in homeless shelters in NYC, on national college campuses and in communities. | Morris Goldberg and OJOYO South African composers, vocalists, and musicians: Morris Goldberg (saxophone, flute, penny whistle) renowned for performing with Paul Simon, among others, especially Paul's "Graceland" album, and Morris' tenure on "The Rosie O'Donnell Show"; Anton Fig (drums), renowned by his tenure on "Late Night with David Letterman" and performing with Paul Simon; and Simon tour mate - Tony Cedras (keyboards, trumpet, accordion, vocals) who also toured with Amandla Cultural Ensemble in exile; and Chulo Gatewood, who toured with Harry Belafonte and accompanies Tony Bird on the album "Sorry Africa". The acclaimed musicians have also performed and recorded with exiled singer Letta Mbulu, Harry Belafonte, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Jonathan Butler, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and more. The OJOYO sound is Safrojazz, a combination of South African and American music. Cape Town born Morris Goldberg combined the sounds of his Township heritage, with the American music he learned to love. OJOYO members also include Richard Cummings (keyboards), Damon Duewhite (drums) and Dan Carillo (guitar). Offering concerts, masterclasses and interactive lecture/demos utilizing music and stories about living in South Africa under apartheid, struggles for both black and white musicians, and valuing hard won freedoms. *New show featured at John Drew Theater of Guild Hall, in East Hampton, NY: Township Jive Meets Rhythm and Blues In this production, Cameroon diva Kaïssa meets R&B dynamo Ty Stephens and Branice McKenzie. They are joined by OJOYO, in a fusion concert of World Music. The ensemble plays and sings a selection of songs made popular by Miriam Makeba, plus Rhythm and Blues original and standard material, and original compositions by Morris Goldberg.
